Based in Nosara, Costa Rica, the Wildlife Conservation Association promotes wildlife habitat conservation through scientific research, educational programs, and local advocacy.
To follow is a Q & A with WCA’s founder, Dr. Vanessa Bézy. As a conservation advocate and National Geographic Explorer, Dr. Bézy’s scientific data helps create alliances between the tourism industry, the local community, and the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge.
Q: What issue(s) are you seeking to solve, and in what ways are you working to solve them?
The Ostional National Wildlife Refuge is truly a unique place on Earth and it is one of the most important nesting sites for olive ridley sea turtles in the world. But like many coastal destinations, rapid development is threatening the local ecosystem, human health, and economy.
By learning more about our natural surroundings and engaging the community in the process, we can work together to find solutions for a planet in balance. That’s why our mission is to inspire sustainable living through our research, community outreach, and immersive educational experiences. Our water quality, wildlife, and marinelife monitoring programs all engage the community in the research process so we can work together on solutions to protect these important resources.
Q: What do you find most challenging in your work?
As someone passionate about environmental protection, it’s especially challenging to witness first-hand the impacts tourism and development are having on the local ecosystem. It can also be challenging at times to engage the community and maintain collaborations with other organizations. But it is all worthwhile because these challenges are what makes our work more relevant and impactful!
Q: What do you find most rewarding?
It has been rewarding to witness the local community become more empowered to take action on environmental protection issues. It is especially rewarding to see the powerful impact an interaction with wildlife or connection with nature can have on someone. In the end, our goal is to inspire people to change their habits and reduce their impact on the planet – so it is special to see that process happening as a result of our work.
Q: What do you wish people knew more about the issue(s) you seek to solve?
Sustainability is about more than just protecting the environment. If we really want to live in balance with nature, we need to look beyond environmental protection and start looking more holistically at social and economic aspects too. In the end, “we cannot protect the world's wildlife unless we also protect the needs of the humans that rely on it.” (Gaia Vince)

Q: How do you create joy and hope in your life during the ecological crisis?
I surround myself with like-minded, passionate individuals to remind myself I am not alone and there is still hope! I also intentionally turn my focus towards the remaining abundance of nature around me and let go of things beyond my control. I go anywhere out in nature where I can immerse myself and appreciate the beauty we still have on this planet.
